The November Hospizarbeit und Bioethik Coalition Community Meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. on Tuesday November 1 at Trezevant Manor, located at 177 North Highland. As usual, the meeting will be a potluck. If you plan to bring food, please e-mail Emily at [email protected] to let her know what you will bring.

Our speaker for this meeting will be Madge Tullis, co-founder of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. Ms. Tullis also serves on the Board of Directors of the Suicide Prevention Action Network-USA and sits on the Governor's Advisory Council for Suicide Prevention for the State of Tennessee. With her husband, Dr. Kenneth Tullis, Madge appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Successful People Who Attempted Suicide. The Tullises organized and co-chaired Tennessee's first-ever Suicide Prevention Conference in cooperation with Surgeon General David Satcher and their state's Department of Health. Ms. Tullis will speak about current developments in suicide prevention on the national and local level, and about her experiences as the wife of a survivor of multiple suicide attempts.

Linda Reeves is founder and CEO of Healthy Heart Solutions, a purpose driven program that was established to embrace the parents and caregivers of children with heart defects. The inspiration for Heart Healthy Solutions cameexperience of giving birth to three sons with heart defects, the first of whom died at the age of two years. A fine gospel singer, she is also releasing a new CD and giving a concert to raise money for parents and caregivers of children with heart defects. On Wednesday, November 2, the Tennessee End-of-Life Partnership (TELP) will present a Advance Directives: Charting the Course. The conference will be held from 8:15 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. in the Baptist Hospital Gladys Stringfield Owen Education Center located at 2000 Church Street in Nashville. The keynote speakeer is Terri Schmidt, MD., of the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. Other speakers include Larry Churchill, PhD, Vanderbilt Center for Bio Medical Ethics; John David Cowan, MD, Blount Memorial Hospital: Diane Dycus,Tennessee Deputy Attorney General, and Ron Huff, Clinical Ethicist, HCA. Cashdollar Lecture, will be held from 9:00 A.M. to noon on Friday, November 4 at Christ United Methodist Church. The speaker will be Barbara Rubel, MA, BCETS, CBS, CPBC. Ms. Rubel is the Executive Director of the Griefwork Center, Inc. Her publications include But I Didn’t Say Goodbye: For Parents and Professionals Helping Child Suicide Survivors and Death, Dying and Bereavement: Providing Compassion During a Time of Need. Nursing Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be provided free of charge.

Barbara Rubel will also give a presentation entitled Resiliency in Health Care: An Essential Skill in Preventing Burnout and Compassion Fatigue. It is scheduled for 10:00 A.M. to noon on Thursday, November 3, in Room 302 of the UTHSC General Education Building, which is at 8 S. Dunlap, on the southeast corner of Dunlap and Madison. Nursing CEUs will also be available free of charge.

In addition, Ms. Rubel will present her Palette of Grief, an experiential workshop for adults grieving or anticipating a loss, and for professionals who work with grieving individuals. The goal is to understand the changes in one's life - physically, emotionally, spiritually, cognitively, and behaviorally. This workshop will be held on November 3, from 6:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the Church of the Holy Communion, 4645 Walnut Grove.

Like the Cashdollar lecture itself, both of the additional presentations are free of charge, but seating is limiting.
