April 22 Forum
On April 22, 2004, the Mid-South Hospizarbeit und Bioethik Coalition (CCC) sponsored a community forum entitled Matters of Life and Death: Advancing Excellence in End-of-Life Care, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through their Rallying Points program. The consultant and plenary speaker was Donna Bales, president and CEO of the Kansas Life Project, Kansas' state Rallying Points organization. Opening remarks were delivered by Marilynn Robinson, Senior Vice-President, Saint Francis Hospital, and Co-Pastor, Saint Andrew AME Church.
July 22 Follow-up Meeting
On July 16, 2004, Kenneth Robinson, MD, the Tennessee Commissioner of Health and pastor of St. Andrew A.M.E. Church in Memphis, spoke at a second forum, entitled Advancing Excellence in End-of-Life Care: Next Steps. The program included a presentation of the findings of the April forum and a report on efforts currently underway to improve end-of life care on the state and local levels. Attorney Charles Key talked about the status of the newly approved Tennessee Health Care Decisions Act.
